HIPAA Tip
The Extension Deadline Has
Passed—Now What?
Physicians
who are covered entities under the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act who did not file a compliance plan with the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services by the October 15 deadline are now prohibited
from using electronic transactions that are not compliant with the HIPAA
transaction rules. You can, however, submit non-compliant claims through a
clearinghouse or billing service, provided the clearinghouse or billing service
filed for the extension.
At press time, there was some indication that the filing period
might be extended. CMA will monitor the situation and notify physicians if CMS
does indeed extend the filing period.
If you have more questions about HIPAA compliance, start by
reading the newly updated ON-CALL document #1600, "HIPAA Overview and Action
Plan." ON-CALL documents are available free to CMA members at http://www.cmanet.org/logon. Nonmembers can
purchase ON-CALL documents for $2 per page from the CMA Bookstore, http://www.cmanet.org/bookstore. If
you still have questions, sign up for CMA's HIPAA compliance
workshop.
