Do Not Procrastinate: Start Testing HIPAA Transactions
Now [Posted
05/08/03]
NHIC, California’s Medicare
carrier, reports that 25 percent of California physicians are sending in their
Medicare claims using the new HIPAA-compliant standard transaction formats. As of October
16, all physician practices that employ 10 or more full-time-equivalent employees (including physicians) must
bill Medicare electronically. Those electronic billings must be HIPAA-compliant or Medicare will
reject them.
October 16 is
days away. If you (or your billing service) need more information on how to
start testing or upgrading your systems to assure your ability to generate
HIPAA-compliant claims, visit the HIPAA Resource Center at CMA’s members-only
website, http://www.cmanet.org/logon.
CMA is continually developing resources to assist members with this
transition. There will be a survey in next week’s Alert to solicit input on how
CMA might better assist physicians as they convert to HIPAA-compliant billing
systems.

Help Center at http://www.calphys.org.
