Budget White Paper:
The Faces of Medi-Cal

CMA and more than a dozen other plaintiffs joined together today to file a lawsuit against the State of California to stop the $237 million in Medi-Cal cuts that are scheduled to take effect in January.

The lawsuit and request for a preliminary injunction, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento, alleges that the 5 percent cut authorized in this fall’s budget is in violation of the Social Security Act because legislators ignored how those reductions would affect access to care for the more than 6 million poor, disabled, elderly, and children who get their health care through the Medi-Cal system. Federal law requires that provider payments be sufficient to assure patients equal access to medical care.
