Physicians and groups who billed Medi-Cal in 2003 for clinical laboratory tests or examinations will soon receive a letter from the Department of Health Services (DHS) requesting verification of their clinical laboratory certificates, and, if applicable, their clinical laboratory licenses or registrations. It is important that you supply DHS with the requested information by April 2. If you fail to do so, any claims submitted under your provider number for laboratory tests or examinations will be denied.

State and federal law requires providers who bill Medi-Cal for clinical laboratory tests to possess a current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) certificate and a clinical laboratory license or registration (unless exempt under Business and Professions Code Section 1241) for each location at which clinical laboratory tests or examinations are performed.
