New Laws 2006

By Catherine I. Hanson
CMA Vice President
& General Counsel

CMA’s dedicated staff of lobbyists, lawyers, and others worked tirelessly this year, as in years past, to protect physician practices from legal, legislative, and regulatory intrusions.

This article summarizes the new laws likely to affect a large segment of the physician community in 2006 and beyond. The laws described in this article are effective January 1, 2006, unless otherwise indicated.

Other new laws of more limited interest are discussed in the relevant portions of the 2006 California Physicians Legal Handbook (to be published in early 2006) and CMA ON-CALL system. The laws described below are effective January 1, 2006, unless otherwise indicated.
